Survived my first year in New York City
I’ll drink to that.
Its been almost a year now..
living in the city. I have pretty mixed feelings about it. With graduate school coming up, changes at work, holidays and moving in February, I feel a lot different and a lot the same.
I think my biggest problem is that I change my mind every week. It doesn’t help that I’m trying to decide a healthy balance between work and school. Do I really want to pull my hair out trying to convince these schools? I’ve been thinking about transferring to another apple store and and just taking classes as a non matriculated student. Maybe I’m just not ready yet to be full time.
I am ready to leave New York and the state as a whole. I just can’t decide if making decisions because I’m scared, or because I’m actually being level headed.
A little late in posting this, but new hair cut. Very excited about it :)
I think its great that you have the ambition to move to New York. However, just keep in mind that its not going to be an easy process.
When Kyle, Kieran and I moved to the city we had to put a lot of money down on a place in order to show our landlord that we were responsible and could hold our own. If you plan to move down by yourself, I would suggest that you sublet first. Many of my coworkers did the whole subletting thing as a means of getting into new york initially. If you plan to move with friends, just be prepared for broker fees, multiple deposits and first/last months rent. Good credit and proof of income are also heavily weighed and you still might need a guarantor for signing a lease.
I’m not trying to scare you at all about moving, just making sure you know the real part of it. After moving to Brooklyn and being unemployed for 3 months, I went from having 2,500 dollars in my savings to being 2,000 in credit card debt- and I’m very good about my money. I was very lucky to get the job at Apple and paid off my debts in only a few months. I’m even able to save money now, but it was really rough at first.
This is the first time that I have been 100% financially free from my parents. For a lot of us that moved into the city, the first year was mainly a year to get stable and establish ourselves. You can do it, but you have to be smart about it. You are going to make mistakes, but thats what growing up is.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. You can do it, I know you can and we are here to help you.
